Chronology 759-700 BC

This period is the most difficult to reconstruct. I've made some modifications to Thiele's reconstruction here. He rejects Sargon's claim to have conquered Samaria in 721 BC, rejects Hezekiah's syncronisms with Hosea in Kings and Chronicles, and telescopes the two invasions by Sennacherib recorded in Kings into one. I attempt to preserve all three.
First, let's reconstruct Israel's chronology. Jeroboam died and Zechariah became king in the 38th year of Azariah (753 BC). Zechariah ruled only 6 months and Shallum after him only a month. Shallum, and Menahem after him, both became king in the 39th year of Azariah. Pekahiah succeeded Menahem in the 50th year of Azariah, and Pekah him in the 52nd year (740/39 BC). This is where things fall apart. Pekah's 20 years plus Hosea's 9 years brings us to 711 BC, 10 years too late. Thiele solves this by guessing that Pekah was a rival king during the reign of Menahem. He overlaps Pekah's 20 years with Menahem's 10 years and Pekahiah's 2 years, gaining him 12 years, so he dates the fall of Samaria to 723 BC. Since Pekah served under Pekahiah, then rebelled, I propose a slightly different reconstruction. Pekah was rival to Menahem for 10 years, served under Pekahiah for 2 that aren't counted, then rebelled and ruled on his own for another 10 years. This lets me date the fall of Samaria consistently with Assyrian records in 721 BC.
The two year gap in the count is further verified by the synchronisms with Jotham. Jotham became king in the second year of Pekah (note that this requires a significant overlap with Azariah, which is verified explicitly in the Biblical data), and Pekah died and Hosea became king in the 20th year of Jotham. Thus 18 years of Pekah's reign is equated to 20 years. This gives us some confidence in the guess about the rivalry between Pekah and Menahem.
The reconstruction is not without problems however. Jotham reigned for only 16 years, so how do we have a syncronism with his 20th year? We can only guess. Perhaps Ahaz deposed him before he died or perhaps the 16 year reign is a scribal error, copied from Ahaz's data. We seem to have an overlap between Ahaz and Jotham too since Hosea is also recorded as becoming king in the 12th year of Ahaz. This is consistent with Hezekiah becoming king in the 3rd year of Hosea after Ahaz's death, and the equation of Hezekiah's 4th and 6th years with Hosea's 7th and 9th years.
Thiele rejects these syncronisms as erroneous reconstructions and slides Hezekiah's reign forward so that the invasion of Hezekiah's 14th year is equated with the one known from Assyrian records in 701 BC. The record in Kings clearly indicates two invasions however. The first in Hezekiah's 14th year after which Heziakiah's life was extended 15 years, and Merodach-Baladan visited. The second invasion in kings is to be equated with the one known from Assyrian records about 11 years later. This means the record of the second invasion in Kings is dislocated chronologically, but it retains the chronological data intact.

2Chr29:30 Moreover Hezekiah the king and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praise unto the LORD with the words of David, and of Asaph the seer. And they sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshipped.

2Chr29:31 Then Hezekiah answered and said, Now ye have consecrated yourselves unto the LORD, come near and bring sacrifices and thank offerings into the house of the LORD. And the congregation brought in sacrifices and thank offerings; and as many as were of a free heart burnt offerings.

2Chr29:32 And the number of the burnt offerings, which the congregation brought, was threescore and ten bullocks, an hundred rams, and two hundred lambs: all these were for a burnt offering to the LORD.

|
2Chr29:33 And the consecrated things were six hundred oxen and three thousand sheep.
|
|
|
|
|
2Chr29:34 But the priests were too few, so that they could not flay all the burnt offerings: wherefore their brethren the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, and until the other priests had sanctified themselves: for the Levites were more upright in heart to sanctify themselves than the priests.

2Chr29:35 And also the burnt offerings were in abundance, with the fat of the peace offerings, and the drink offerings for every burnt offering. So the service of the house of the LORD was set in order.

2Chr29:36 And Hezekiah rejoiced, and all the people, that God had prepared the people: for the thing was done suddenly.
|

2Chr30:1 And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel.

2Chr30:2 For the king had taken counsel, and his princes, and all the congregation in Jerusalem, to keep the passover in the second month.

2Chr30:3 For they could not keep it at that time, because the priests had not sanctified themselves sufficiently, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem.

2Chr30:4 And the thing pleased the king and all the congregation.

2Chr30:5 So they established a decree to make proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beersheba even to Dan, that they should come to keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done it of a long time in such sort as it was written.

2Chr30:6 So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.

2Chr30:7 And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, which trespassed against the LORD God of their fathers, who therefore gave them up to desolation, as ye see.

2Chr30:12 Also in Judah the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the princes, by the word of the LORD.

2Chr30:14 And they arose and took away the altars that were in Jerusalem, and all the altars for incense took they away, and cast them into the brook Kidron.

2Chr30:15 Then they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the second month: and the priests and the Levites were ashamed, and sanctified themselves, and brought in the burnt offerings into the house of the LORD.

2Chr30:16 And they stood in their place after their manner, according to the law of Moses the man of God: the priests sprinkled the blood, which they received of the hand of the Levites.

2Chr30:17 For there were many in the congregation that were not sanctified: therefore the Levites had the charge of the killing of the passovers for every one that was not clean, to sanctify them unto the LORD.

2Chr30:21 And the children of Israel that were present at Jerusalem kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness: and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day, singing with loud instruments unto the LORD.

2Chr30:22 And Hezekiah spake comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good knowledge of the LORD: and they did eat throughout the feast seven days, offering peace offerings, and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers.

2Chr30:23 And the whole assembly took counsel to keep other seven days: and they kept other seven days with gladness.
|
|
|
|
|
2Chr30:24 For Hezekiah king of Judah did give to the congregation a thousand bullocks and seven thousand sheep; and the princes gave to the congregation a thousand bullocks and ten thousand sheep: and a great number of priests sanctified themselves.

2Chr30:25 And all the congregation of Judah, with the priests and the Levites, and all the congregation that came out of Israel, and the strangers that came out of the land of Israel, and that dwelt in Judah, rejoiced.

2Chr30:26 So there was great joy in Jerusalem: for since the time of Solomon the son of David king of Israel there was not the like in Jerusalem.

2Ki17:13 Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.
2Ki17:14 Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God.

2Ki17:20 And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight.
2Ki17:21 For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drave Israel from following the LORD, and made them sin a great sin.
2Ki17:22 For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them;

Sennacherib would not have been king yet. Kings seems to record two invasions, although some commentors consider there to have only been one. If this earlier one is to be dated in 713/12 BC, then Sennacherib would have led it under Sargon II.

2Chr32:2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,

Isa38:11 I said, I shall not see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.
Isa38:12 Mine age is departed, and is removed from me as a shepherd's tent: I have cut off like a weaver my life: he will cut me off with pining sickness: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.
